Bobby Rodriguez and Joey Valdepena first met, briefly, in New York in the late ‘90s to later reconnect and form Fiction Company in Los Angeles a few years later. On their debut release, Maps & Measures, Rodriguez says of the album's title, "It's where you are and where you've been. It's a point of measurement with which you can gauge your progress. Or in this case, our progress." Joey Valdepena claims the album's emotional high point, "Dark of the Day," reveals a poignant, personal back story: "I wrote the concept for 'Dark of the Day' very soon after my brother drowned last year. I remember feeling so empty, but thoughts of being with him made me happy. It was in June and it was sunny. The birds were singing and the flowers blooming. It was just dark at the same time."
On Fiction Company’s sophomore release, Company Ink, Bobby and Joey with Dan returned with a new, lush, layered electro indie pop album that was 3 years in the making. A step ahead from their original stripped down electro sound of “Design” (featured on the Napoleon Dynamite Soundtrack) and Maps & Measures, Company Ink combines the electronic sounds of vintage drum machines and synths with soulful bass lines and classic rock guitar leads. While Bobby's and Dan's distinct pop sensibilities are at the core of every song, Joey's croonings and mysterious lyrics add a dark, yet uplifting edge to the sound.
Fiction Company has previously appeared on the soundtrack to Blood & Chocolate (a cover of Billy Idol’s “Flesh For Fantasy”), Mun Compilado I (a cover of "Spirit In The Sky") and the Napoleon Dynamite Soundtrack (“Design”), Grammy-nominated as Best Compilation Soundtrack Album in 2006.
